Your initial question brought to mind one of my favourite quotations from Simone Weil, which is at least half an answer: "Christ likes us to prefer truth to him because, before being Christ, he is truth. If one turns aside from him to go toward the truth, one will not go far before falling into his arms." So perhaps the novelist's call is to tell the truth first? Godric sounds fascinating, thanks.

Wow, this post was timely. Thank you. I’m attempting to write a novel about St. Thaney (Teneu) of Glasgow, and I mostly feel that I’m not saintly enough myself to understand her depth. So *Godric* is moving to the top of my reading pile now. This article was tremendously helpful and hopeful for me.

I think Eugene Vodolazkin wrote a (fictional) saint’s life extremely well in *Laurus* as well. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so moved by a character.
