Hello readers. I’ll keep this brief, since you already have a lot to digest. I just wanted to alert you to some forthcoming events I’ll be doing this year. One of them has limited space and is likely to fill up, so now’s the time to strike ….
First off, I’ll be in Estonia next month - a first for me - speaking at the International Aldous Huxley Conference about Brave New World and - well, how we’re basically living in it. It’s free to attend.
In October, I’ll be giving the annual Erasmus Lecture, organised by First Things magazine, in New York City. Tickets can be booked in advance.
Later that month, I’ll be attending a small, weekend-long event in upstate New York called Meaning vs the Machine. I’ll be in discussion with writer Matthew Crawford, whose Substack Archedelia is worth reading, about the Machine age and its discontents. There are only thirty places and some are already gone, so book now if you want to come.
In early 2025, I’ll be in the woods of Devon for a weekend with Martin Shaw and Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, talking about wildness and Christianity. It’s a funny old world.
I have some other things in the pipeline too, including a few days in Romania in November. I’ll let you know about these when they are pinned down.
While I’m here, let me alert you to two other things you might like:
Firstly, if you enjoyed my recent piece about England, a new Substack called The Institute of England has just popped up. It’s all about English culture today, and it has the same author as Tales of Old England Christendom, which may also appeal. Along similar lines, you might want to explore The New Albion.
Finally, I have heard from a reader, Fotini Hamplova, whose labour of love for some time has been to create a website containing a database of Christian-friendly books for children. If you’re a parent, it’s well worth a look.
That’s all for now folks. Take care.
Thanks for the lead on Fotni’s book website! I’ve been wishing someone would make a labor of love like this for quite some time, and mostly came up with dead ends looking for one. I already picked up 4 books from the list for my toddler that I wouldn’t have found otherwise.
Dear Paul, I'm delighted to be joining you, Matt, N.S. and all the others for the Meaning vs the Machine weekend. What illustrious company! In the meantime, I am enjoying all your posts. (I'm new to the Substack world, and have a lot of catching up to do.)
Warmly, Marilyn.
